Dundee is Scotland’s fourth-largest city and the United Kingdom’s 51st most populated developed region. Today, Dundee is marketed as “One City, Many Discoveries” in recognition of the city’s scientific background and the RRS Discovery, Robert Falcon Scott’s Antarctic research vessel constructed in Dundee and presently berthed at Discovery Point. Since the 1980s, biomedical and technology companies have come, and the city now accounts for 10% of the UK’s digital entertainment industry, which includes mobile app development and gaming. The city of Dundee is home to two universities: the University of Dundee and Abertay University. Dundee was named the United Nations’ first UNESCO City of Design in 2014 for its contributions to industries such as medical research, comic books, and video games.
Travel to and from Dundee
Bus
Dundee has an extensive bus network. The Seagate bus station is the primary departure point for travels outside of town. Xplore Dundee provides most intra-city services, with Stagecoach Strathtay offering more rural routes. The main Dundee station on the waterfront has been rebuilt as part of the waterfront redevelopment programme and has the considerably smaller Broughty Ferry station on the city’s eastern outskirts.
Rail
Passenger services are provided in Dundee by ScotRail, CrossCountry, Caledonian Sleeper, and London Northeastern Railway. Invergowrie, Balmossie, and Monifieth are also nearby. The Freightliner terminal in Dundee closed in the 1980s, and since then there are no trains that served the city.
Air
Loganair, Scotland’s airline, flies from Dundee Airport to London City Airport and Belfast City Airport. The airport, which can accept light planes, lies 1.9 miles west of the city centre near the Tay River. Edinburgh Airport, located 59.2 miles to the south, is the nearest major international airport.

Dundee Contemporary Arts (DCA) is an international art centre in the Nethergate neighbourhood close to Dundee Rep that opened in 1999 and includes two contemporary art galleries, a two-screen arthouse cinema, a learning and public engagement programme, a shop, and a café bar.

The DMFF is also a member of the International Alliance for Mountain Film (IAMF) and other significant international mountain film festivals. Odeon and Cineworld are the city’s two multiplex theatres.

The Orchestra has played an important role in Scotland’s musical life throughout its history, notably performing during the inauguration ceremony of the Scottish Parliament building in 2004. The Royal Scottish National Orchestra frequently performs at Dundee’s major concert auditorium, the Caird Hall (named after its benefactor, jute baron James Key Caird) in City Square. During Dundee’s annual Jazz, Guitar, and Blues Festivals, numerous smaller venues host local and international performers.
