Glasgow grew from a small rural settlement on the River Clyde. With the establishment of the University of Glasgow in the 15th century, it became a major centre of the Scottish Enlightenment.It later grew into one of Britain’s main trade hubs with North America. During the Industrial Revolution, Glasgow grew to become a major manufacturing centre of chemicals, textiles and engineering. It had a notable marine engineering industry, which produced many ships.
