Passing the PRINCE2 Foundation exam – Part 1

Introduction to the exam

Welcome to the first article in our guide to passing the PRINCE2 Foundation exam. The guide contains plenty of advice, hints, and tips to help you improve your exam technique.

The information presented here is primarily aimed at students completing our online PRINCE2 courses, but it should also be helpful for anyone else who is interested in the PRINCE2 project management methodology and PRINCE2 qualifications scheme.

PRINCE2 qualifications are very well recognised in the project management industry and often specified in project management job vacancies, making them highly desirable.

The PRINCE2 Foundation qualification is ideal for project managers, project team members, and individuals in project support roles, because it demonstrates that they understand one of the most popular project management methodologies in the world. If you currently work in project management or aim to find employment in a project management role, passing the Foundation exam can therefore be an important step towards developing your career. Moreover, achieving the Foundation qualification is a pre-requisite for sitting the PRINCE2 Practitioner exam.

Our considerable experience as PRINCE2 trainers and exam invigilators strengthens our belief that passing the PRINCE2 Foundation exam requires not only a thorough knowledge of PRINCE2, but also a robust approach to tackling the exam questions. In other words, successful PRINCE2 Foundation candidates have a detailed understanding of how PRINCE2 works, as well as effective exam technique. With this in mind, we have created the following strategy for PRINCE2 Foundation exam success.

Who takes the exam?

More than half a million people around the world have taken the PRINCE2 Foundation exam to date. That should give you an insight into the exam’s relevance to a wide range of individuals from many different industries and professional backgrounds.

Broadly speaking, the exam is intended for anyone who wants the opportunity to show that they understand how PRINCE2 works. Some candidates want to pass the exam because they need to use the PRINCE2 method on a day-to-day basis in their workplace; others may want to add the PRINCE2 Foundation qualification to their CVs, with the aim of strengthening their project management job applications.

Examples of project management jobs to which the exam can be particularly relevant include:

  • Project manager
  • Team manager
  • Project Board member
  • Project Office personnel
  • Project Assurance personnel

Purpose of the exam

The PRINCE2 Foundation exam measures whether or not you understand PRINCE2 well enough to work effectively in a PRINCE2 project environment.
